The Betsy Lehman Center is a dynamic state agency that plays a unique role in improving health care safety and quality in Massachusetts.

Our programming, research, policy and communications work engages other state health care agencies, providers, and consumers in initiatives.  The Center, named for a Boston Globe health columnist who died in 1994 from a preventable medical error, is supported by and shares space with the state’s Center for Health Information and Analysis (CHIA).

We are seeking an individual to serve as the Betsy Lehman Center’s Chief of Staff. The Chief of Staff reports directly to the Executive Director, providing leadership and high-level oversight of agency activities and staff. The Chief of Staff’s functions contribute to the success of the agency mission by providing support to the Executive Director, agency managers and staff, ensuring continuity of operations and fostering team communications and coordination.   

This is a full-time position with an annual salary of $125,000 - $150,000. The Center operates on a hybrid work model. All staff members are expected to work onsite in our office near Copley Square in Boston on at least two designated days per week, allowing for flexible, remote work on other days. The Center is comprised of 18 full-time staff and 8 part-time contract employees.

 As Chief of Staff, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Advise and support the Executive Director in the development, planning and execution of the agency’s strategic goals and priorities. This includes input, coordination, tracking, and work products to bolster the success of programs and initiatives as well as steering the alignment of key goals across the organization. You will work on high-priority initiatives across the organization, occasionally acting as project manager and/or cross-team lead/coordinator.  
  • Provide leadership, decision-making and execution of work products on operational, administrative, strategic planning, budgetary, and personnel matters. You will have a strong working knowledge of the agency’s financial standing and needs and devise solutions to operational and other challenges. You will also work closely with our sister agency, CHIA, which provides our team with financial, human resources, technology, procurement, legal and other operational support.
  • Manage a diverse staff of committed individuals with expertise in research, communications, programming and policy, including about 9 FTEs as direct reports.  You will serve as the primary point for the executive director on personnel matters and engage with staff individually and in team meetings to foster a culture of respect and to accomplish agency goals. This includes mentoring, providing guidance and championing the work of managers and staff in their leadership of initiatives and projects. You will also lead the Center’s hiring efforts as needed.
  • Enhance the overall effectiveness of the team. Make recommendations, provide guidance, support and input or decisions to agency managers and staff to enhance overall team effectiveness and to address time sensitive matters. Manage the flow of information to support the Executive Director’s communications with managers, staff, other agencies, and stakeholders.  Represent the Executive Director as needed to ensure essential, timely, and efficient exchange of information.

 We are looking for someone who thrives in a collaborative environment and has experience interacting with people with diverse viewpoints and experiences. Specifically, we seek a Chief of Staff who is/has: 

  1. A strategic thinker with proven leadership skills: Demonstrated ability to plan, prioritize, manage multiple competing priorities, incorporate diverse feedback and viewpoints.  
  2. Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills: Ability to communicate and interact with the public, stakeholders, staff, and coworkers in a respectful and appropriate manner.
  3. Ability to manage budgets. Experience preparing and analyzing financial information on behalf of government agencies or other entities, and comfortable drawing conclusions, making recommendations and advocating with funding sources.
  4. Demonstrated experience leading people to successfully meet their work and professional development goals:  Ability to lead and deal tactfully with others and maintain harmonious working relationships. Experience managing staff, contractors, and interns.
  5. Knowledge of the health care landscape. Demonstrated experience in public health, health care policy, and related fields, including working relationships with health care stakeholders in Massachusetts.

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

 Applicants must have at least (A) six (6) years of full-time or, equivalent part-time, professional, administrative, supervisory, or managerial experience in business administration, business management, public administration, public management, clinical administration or clinical management of which (B) at least two (2) years must have been in a supervisory or managerial capacity or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and substitutions below.

Substitutions:

I. A certificate in a relevant or related field may be substituted for one (1) year of the required (A) experience.

II. A Bachelor's degree in a related field may be substituted for two (2) years of the required (A) experience.

III. A Graduate degree in a related field may be substituted for three (3) years of the required (A) experience.

IV. A Doctorate degree in a related field may be substituted for four (4) years of the required (A) experience.
